[Kitayuzawa Onsen in Date] Day Trip Bath and Shirakinu-no-Yuka Can Be Enjoyed

October 27th, 2014

Kitayuzawa Onsen

Kitayuzawa Onsen (北湯沢温泉) is a hot-spring place in Date city located in the north part of Muroran city. 5 accommodations dot along Osaru River and National Route 453 (Usu National Route) linked Lake Toya with Lake Shikotsu. In the Osaru River with 50.4 km in total length, after volcanic ash had been deposited on the riverbed, green tuff bedrock has exposed at Kitayuzawa Onsen district only for about 2 km, so the scenery was named "Shirakinu-no-Yuka (白絹の床)" after color of the bedrock. Tourists can play in the river because of the shallow depth. If you play it, you should bring a towel to wipe your feet.

Shirakinu-no-Yuka

The hot-spring place is divided roughly into 2 districts, a huge hotel district and a post office district, and the huge hotel district has Midori-no-Kaze Resort Kitayuzawa (緑の風リゾート きたゆざわ), Kitayuzawa Mori-no-soraniwa (きたゆざわ 森のソラニワ) and a footbath, and the post office district has Onyado Kawasemi (御宿かわせみ), Yumoto Horohoro Sanso (湯元 ホロホロ山荘) and Onsen Mishuku Takahashi (温泉民宿たかはし). Except a buckwheat noodle restraunt and Izakaya at the Onsen Mishuku Takahashi, there is no stores such as a souvenir shop and a convenience store in particular. By the way, another one districe has Onyado Ryushoan (御宿 竜松庵) and Ryokan Koikawa (旅館 鯉川) in the Kitayuzawa Onsen, but I do not know that they open a business at present. There are Sankaidaki Park (三階滝公園) and オロフレ峠展望台 (Orofure Pass Observatory) around the Kitayuzawa Onsen.

It is said that the origin of the Kitayuzawa Onsen is that Mr.Umekichi Ueno (上野梅吉) opened a hot spring facility in 1882, and named "Umekichi Onsen (梅吉温泉)". Then Mr. Sukehachi Yokoyama (横山助八) succeeded to the hot spring facility in 1912, and named Yokoyama Onsen (横山温泉). * The Yokoyama Onsen Hotel had opened a business until 2000, unfortunately it was shutted down at present. The whole neighborhood was renamed Kitayuzawa in 1941, and the hot-spring place has been well-known as the Kitayuzawa Onsen. By the way, nonstop buses for common visitors do not run. But nonstop buses run by Noguchi Kanko group (野口観光) for hotel guests run between the Kitayuzawa Onsen and Sapporo and New Chitose Airport. The day trip bathers using the hotels run by the Noguchi Kanko group can use a bus running on the circular route, and enjoy the hot springs at the Kitayuzawa Mori-no-soraniwa and the Yumoto Horohoro Sanso.

Onyado Kawasemi

Onyado Kawasemi is a small-sized long-established onsen ryokan. It is said that a building has a around century-old, and the appearance of the building and the interior decoration have an atmosphere such as Taisho period and Meiji period. A staying is possible, too, and I suppose that hotel guests enjoy an old Japanese room. An entrance fee to the bath facility is JPY 500. A uninhabited reception desk is unusual, and it is a speciality of Onyado Kawasemi. This ryokan has 2 mixed bathing open-air baths, 1 open-air bath for women, 1 indoor bath for men and 1 indoor bath for women. The mixed bathing open-air baths are in particular famous because a view is very good. Fresh green, fall foliage and winter scenery along Osaru River can be enjoyed every season. The baths use free flowing hot springs with adding water, and the hot springs clinging itself to the body has a fine texture.

There was the first indoor bath when I passed through a door of an entrance. There is no place for washing body, and a shower is not provided. But shampoos and body soaps are provided, so the bathers should pour hot springs on themselves with a washbowl from the indoor bath and washed their bodys on the bathfloor. The indoor bath is the size that about 3 people can take a bath. The hot springs are simple hot spring, and are clear and colorless and have neither taste nor smell. The sum total of the hot spring ingredients are 0.648 g/kg. I suppose that the indoor bath is like an appetizer of course dish. Not a role to function as the appetite increase, it will be work to let the bathers increase greed for bathing. It is joking.

After I walked about 30 m along a mysterious corridor like a secret base, I arrived at the open-air baths, main dish. The left side is the open-air bath along the Osaru river. The right side is the open-air bath like a Japanese houseboat. The former is the size that about 10 people can take a bath. I felt as if I took a bath in the river. A view was very nice, and I enjoyed a sence of opening. When the river rises, the open-air bath seems to drown. By the way, I think that the bathers will get comfortable to take a bath in the evening while hearing a sound of a river stream flow.

Another open-air bath is the size that about 20 people can take a bath. Chairs sank in the hot springs to take a long bath. Eaves and hanging japanese lanterns remind me of Japanese houseboat. A plastic glass provided on the hot spring gushing out place. But the hot springs are not drinkable. Because the drinking hot springs are written for having an effect for rheumatism on a hot spring analysis book in 1971, it may be its trace. By the way, bathers can take a bath in wrapping body with bath towel or wearing bathing clothes at the mixed bathing open-air baths. Those are necessary to prepare by theirselves. Because there is not a restroom at a small dressing room, you should get a wash beforehand at the restroom along a corridor.
