March 13th, 2014

Kawayu Onsen

Kawayu Onsen (川湯温泉) is a famous hot-spring place in Teshikaga town located in the northern part of Kushiro city. There are Mt. Iou (硫黄山), Lake Kussharo (屈斜路湖) and Lake Mashu (摩周湖) around the Kawayu Onsen, and it is a base for sightseeing, and about 0.7 million tourists come every year. Ph of the hot springs is about 1.8, and the Kawayu Onsen is popular for great strong acidic hot springs in Japan together with Tamagawa Onsen in Akita prefecture, Kusatsu Onsen in Gunma prefecture, Zao Onsen in Yamagata prefecture and Sukayu Onsen in Aomori prefecture. They are proud of high quality hot springs, and chant "100% narutal free flowing hot springs" as a whole, and all the hot spring facilities use the 100% narutal free flowing hot springs.

It is said that the origin of the Kawayu Onsen is that a Russina-style accommodation was built in 1904. There are 12 accommodations, souvenir shops, restaurants, cafes, a convenience store, Izakaya, bars with a surcharge, footbaths, Taiho Sumo Memorial Hall (大鵬相撲記念館), Kawayu Eco Museum Center (川湯エコミュージアムセンター) and Kawayu Onsen Tourist information Center (川湯温泉観光案内所). Miraku Sushi (味楽寿司), Sobadoraku (そば道楽), Cream Dowa (くりーむ童話) and Inakaya Genpei (いなか家 源平) are popular. But some accommodations have closed their businesses, so the hot spring place looks a deserted street. In addition, there are a few new buildings, and people liking new facilities or hotels may not suit the accommodations.

Kawayu means a hot river in Ainu language, and the hot spring river is still flowing through the center of the Kawayu Onsen. At the beginning, its name used to be Yunokawa (湯ノ川), but the Yunokawa in Hakodate was the same name, and its name has changed to the Kawayu. The heat source of the strong acidic hot springs is Mt. Iou, and a small nail is dissolved in the strong acidic hot springs while dipping into the hot springs 2 weeks. Metal bath facilities at each hot spring facilities get black under the influence of the strong acidic hot springs. Please take off your noble metals to take a bath, because acids bite into metals. Therefore, you will probably think of dangerous hot springs. But when people bath the strong acidic hot springs, it is said that those remove old keratin, and promote the metabolism. Those do not seem to affect on a human body. By the way, the stimulation may be a little strong for people with sensitive skin, so some hot spring facilities provide heated hot water, too.

The Kawayu Onsen is divided into 2 parts, Kawayu Onsen district and Kawayu Onsen Station district, and types of the hot springs are different. A foorbath is provided at the Kawayu Onsen Station, too. PANAPANA and Orchardgrass (オーチャードグラス) are popular around the Kawayu Onsen Station. In the Kawayu Onsen Station district, Visitors can use freely a parking lot at the Kawayu Eco Museum Center and beside Seico Mart (セイコーマート) and Taiho Sumo Memorial Hall. By the way, nonstop buses do not run. But some nonstop buses for hotel guests seem to run between Kawayu Onsen Station and the Kawayu Onsen.

Lake Kussharo

Lake Kussharo (屈斜路湖), the largest caldera lake in Japan, is in Teshikaga town located in the northeastern part of Lake Akan (阿寒湖) and is the second largest caldera lake in the world, too. The perimeter of the lake is about 57 km. There is Nakajima island in the middle of the lake, but a landing is prohibited. The cracks called "Omiwatari (御神渡り * cracks that form in the ice on the Lake)" occur in a winter. Those are the largest size in the Japanese freshwater lake, and the ice cracks seem to occur for 10 km in total length and 2 m in height. In addition, it is famous as a wintering spot for whooper swan, and they rest their wings on the surface of the non-frozen water by hot springs melting. Article is here

Mt. Iou

Mt. Iou (硫黄山) is an active volcano with 512 m in height in Teshikaga town located between Kawayu and Lake Kussharo (屈斜路湖). It is called "Iouzan", but its true name is Mt. Atosanupuri (アトサヌプリ). Because it was used to be a sulfur mine, it has been called Mt. Iou. * The sulfur means iou in Japanese language. There are more than 1500 large and small craters and those still have been vomitting forth steam. A mysterious scene that greenish brown and yellow ground changed color by sulfur and native brown ground are looked over in front of our eyes, and it smells the sulfur like bad eggs in the air. After Kawayu-Onsen Station became an unmanned station, the Orchardgrass started a business in 1987. The station building is a wooden building built in 1930, and it has an atmosphere such as the Showa period. There is a footbath on the station building, too. Article is here

Yunokaku Ikedaya

Yunokaku Ikedaya is a small-sized long-established onsen ryokan founded in 1952, and has only 12 guestrooms, and is a little far away from the center of the Kawayu Onsen. Hokkaido Center Village Inc. (北海道センタービレッジ株式会社) runs it. They own 6 hot spring souces, so a quantity of the hot springs is abundant. 3 buildings, Main Building, Annex Building and Sogen-no-Yu (草原の湯) are built on the site, and large public bathhouses are on the 2nd floor of the Main Building, and the large public bathhouses are away from the Sogen-no-Yu. I took a bath at the mixed bathing open-air bath (05:00-10:00 for exclusive use of women) and the bathhouse for men. The mixed bathing open-air bath "Sogen-no-Yu" has only 1 open-air bath. Water temperature of hot springs is from 39 C to 42 C. The open-air bath uses 100% natural free flowing hot springs. There is not a roof, and it has a sence of openness. Bathers can take a forest bath, too. North Fox and Striped Squirrela Chipmunk seem to be seen if you are lucky. On the other hand, because the bath is close to the nature, mosquitos and spiders appear. By the way, stars seem to be beautiful at night.

But there are not facilities for washing body, after the bathers wash their bodies at the bathhouse for men or women, should go to the mixed bathing open-air bath "Sogen-no-Yu". A restroom and a hair dryer are not installed at a dressing room. In addition, the bathers must move from the Sogen-no-Yu to the bathhouse in their clothes because the Sogen-no-Yu is a little far away from the bathhouses for men or women. The Sogen-no-Yu is closed in a winter.

Kawayu Public Bath

Kawayu Public Bath is only public bath in Kawayu Onsen around the center of the Kawayu Onsen. They were founded from 1920s to 1930s. A building has an atmosphere such as Showa period. Visitors enter nervously it the first time that they see the building. The public bath are popular, and a parking lot is often full. I gave up bathing 2 times because of full parking lot. An entrance fee to the bath facility is JPY 250. Very cheap!
