Easy Access to Growing Naturally Large Colony -Japanese Iris Ensata Colony in Ebetsu-
July 10th, 2017
Japanese Iris Ensata Colony (ノハナショウブ群生地) is in Ebetsu located in the southeastern part of Sapporo. Visitors might be difficult to find it because it is surronded by fields. About 50,000 Japanese Iris Ensata (ノハナショウブ) grow naturally on the site of 6700 m2, and the best time to see is from late June to early July. Rich purple flowers covered the green land is worth seeing. Paths with about 360 m in total length are built around the land, and it takes about 10 minutes on foot. I was interested in the Japanese Iris Ensata with changing backgrounds. A restroom is built on the site. Admission is a little token of your gratitude. A parking lot is free of charge.
Japanese Iris Ensata is wild original of more than 5,000 kinds of Japanese Iris, a domesticated form, Japanese Iris Ensata growing naturally is called "Japanese Iris Ensata". It was used as a work of Mr. Jyakuchu Ito (伊藤若冲) in Edo period, and Japanese Iris Ensata was too much of a daily plant for early people. But it is vulnerable to dryness, I do not know whether global warming effects it, there has been a decline in colonies year by year in various parts of Japan. In Hokkaido, there are relatively many Japanese Iris Ensata Colonies, Beniya Nature Flower Garden and around Wakkanai. But there are few the Japanese Iris Ensata Colonies near a big city, so easy access to the Japanese Iris Ensata Colony in Ebetsu is valuable.
