Secret Onsen and Nature Onsen in Hokkaido

It is said that Hokkaido has most hot spring places in Japan. Because it is large, a lot of secret onsen and nature onsen are in a vast land. The secrets onsen and the nature onsen that is popular with tourist riders and professional campers that know hokkaido like the back of their hand dot in the Hokkaido. Those can be enjoyed extraordinary situation, and bathers can forget daily life. Overseas people draw attention to the onsen in Hokkaido lately, too, so I think that the secrets onsen and the nature onsen in Hokkaido are fascinating. I just went to following onsen, but it is said that there are still a lot of the secret onsen and the nature onsen. Touring those are a very long distance in Hokkaido, so you should drive around to nearby the secret onsen and the nature onsen. By the way, the nature onsen tour is most likely to come across a bear, so you should be fully equipped! In addition, beware of poisonous gas!

Secret Onsen and Nature Onsen in Southern Hokkaido

Southern Hokkaido is the smallest district in the Hokkaido, but there are a lot of the secret onsen and the nature onsen. The following are the secret onsen and the nature onsen within driving place. Except those, some the secret onsen and the nature onsen must be raeched on foot. For example, Isoya Onsen (磯谷温泉) in Hakodate, Tenbodai-no-Yu (展望台の湯) and Eirin-no-Yu (営林の湯) in Shiriuchi, Amanogawa-no-Yu (天の川の湯) in Kaminokuni and Kinkato (金花湯), Houo-no-Yu (鳳凰の湯), Oban-no-Yu (大判の湯) and Koban-no-Yu (小判の湯) in Shimamaki. The Kinkato is famous in particular.

Mizunashi-Kaihin Onsen

Mizunashi-Kaihin Onsen (水無海浜温泉) is a hot spring place at the foot of Mt. Esan in the eastern part of Hakodate city. The distance is around 50 km away from the center of the Hakodate, and a natural onsen and Hotel Cape (ホテル恵風) are built along Hokkaido Road 635 at the easternmost tip of Kameda Peninsula (亀田半島). Drive carefully because a road is narrow. Esan-misaki Park (恵山岬公園) is developed around here, and Esan-misaki Lighthouse (恵山岬灯台) and Hakodate Municipal Lighthouse Museum (函館市灯台資料館) are built there. Misaki Onsen

Misaki Onsen (御崎温泉) is a hot spring place in Esan, Hakodate city. Only Hama-no-Yu (浜の湯) is built nearby Esan Fish Port (恵山漁港) at the end of Hokkaido Road 635, and is a secret onsen like a hideout. The distance between the Misaki Onsen and the center of the Hakodate is around 50 km. There are Esan-Kakokgen (恵山火口原), Esan Observatory (恵山展望台), Misaki Lookout (岬展望台), Azalea Park (つつじ公園), Ishida Onsen (石田温泉) and Esan Onsen (恵山温泉) around here. Shiriuchi Onsen

Shiriuchi Onsen (知内温泉) is a hot spring place in Shiriuchi town located in the southwestern part of Hakodate city. Only Utopia Warakuen (ユートピア和楽園) is bulit at about 50 above sea level in a mountain. The distance is around 12 km away from the center of the Shiriuchi. Unfortunately, restraunts, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built. But Shiriuchi Dam (知内ダム) and Omonai Observatory (重内展望台) are relatively near here. It is said that the shiriuchi Onsen has the oldest onsen in Hokkaido. There is Raiko Shrine (雷公神社) that is well-known for the oldest shrine across 25th generations in Hokkaido near here, Ono Tosa Diary (大野土佐日記) is handed down to posterity. According to legend, Mr. Daigaku Araki (荒木大学) came to Hokkaido to discover gold with his family and followers in 1205, and built Yakushi-do as opening onsen in 1247. Banjyaku Onsen (盤石温泉) is a hot spring place near Kaminoyu Onsen (上の湯温泉) in Yakumo town located in the northwest of Hakodate city. Only Banjyaku Onsen-so (盤石温泉荘) in a mountain that is around 30 km away from the center of the Yakumo is built along a forest road "Bajuyakudake Line (盤石岳線)" at around 60 m above sea level at the foot of Mt. Banjyakudake (盤石岳), and is one of secret onsen in Yakumo. Article is here

Yakumo Onsen

Yakumo Onsen (八雲温泉) is a hot spring place in Yakumo town located in northwest part of Hakodate city. A signboard of Oboko-so (おぼこ荘) is a mark along Kumoishi National Route (雲石国道 * Nationa Route 277), and visitors turn and go straight for around 1 km, and Only Oboko-so (おぼこ荘) is built at around 200 m above sea level at the foot of Mt. Obokodake (雄鉾岳), and is one of secret onsen in Yakumo. The distance is around 20 km away from the center of the Yakumo, and restraunts, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built around here. This place was well-known for hot spring gushing out at Yurappu Mine (遊楽部鉱山) in the Meiji period, and Mr. Yonetaro Takami (高見米太郎) built an onsen hut, and it was called "Takami Onsen (高見温泉)" at the time. After that, it was closed down, and Municipal Yakumo Onsen was founded in 1995. Then it was privatized, and up to now. By the way, around here has the legend of hidden treasure that the remnants of Tokugawa's defeated army hide treasure hid the treasure in Hakodate War. Article is here

Sakurano Onsen

Sakurano Onsen (桜野温泉) is a hot spring place in Yakumo town located in the northwestern part of Hakodate city, and is one of secret onsen in Yakumo. Only Kumane-so (熊嶺荘) is built along Hokkaido Road 573 at about 115 m above sea level in a mountain that is around 15 km away from Nodaoi Station. The distance is around 20 km far away from the center of the Yakumo, Unfortunately, restraunts, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built around here. The Sakurano Onsen was known by Ainu people since a long time ago. When Mr. Yoshichika Tokugawa (徳川義親), the family head of Owari branch of the Tokugawa clan, visited here in early 1900s, he heard about a damaged bear that soaked its body in a hot spring pond, and named "Kumane Onsen" (熊嶺温泉). * Kuma means "Bear" in Japanese. By the way, a wood carving of a bear, a famous Yakumo's speciality, is at his suggestion. After that, Mr. Kado Shiro Yokota (横田門四郎) built an onsen hut in 1930, and it was called "Yokota Onsen" (横田温泉). But it was closed down. The kumane-so has opened a business since 1966, and up to now. Kaminoyu Onsen

Kaminoyu Onsen (上の湯温泉) is a hot-spring place in Yakumo town located in the northwestern part of Hakodate city, and is one of secret onsen in Yakumo. Only Ginkonyu (銀婚湯) and Seiryuen (清龍園) are built along Hokkaido Road 67 at about 70 m above sea level in a mountain that is around 30 km away from the center of the Yakumo. There is Banjyaku Onsen (盤石温泉) (one of famous secret onsen) near the Kaminoyu Onsen. The onsen is known for hot springs gushing out by Ainu people in the old days. It is the oldest record written in Emishi-nisshi (蝦夷日誌) that Mr. Shiro Matsuura (松浦武四郎) took a bath in 1846. After that, Mr. Fukutaro Kawaguchi (川口福太郎) succeeded in drilling a lot of hot springs, and built an onsen hut "Ginkonyu", and up to now. Article is here

Kenichi Onsen

Kenichi Onsen (見市温泉) is a hot spring place in Kumaishi, Yakumo town located in the northwestern part of Hakodate city. Only Kenichi Onsen Ryokan (見市温泉旅館) is built at about 60 m above sea level between Kumoishi National Route (雲石国道 * Nationa Route 277) and Kenichi River (見市川) at the foot of Kumoishi Pass (雲石峠), and is one of secret onsen in Yakumo. The distance between the Kenichi Onsen and the center of the Yakumo is around 30 km, Unfortunately, restraunts, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built around the Kenichi Onsen. It is the origin of the Kenichi Onsen that Mr. Yokichi Otsuka (大塚要吉), the founder, saw a damaged bear that soaked its body in a hot spring pond on the shore of the Kenichi River when he tramped over hills during the Keio year of the Edo period. Hiratanai Onsen

Hiratanai Onsen (平田内温泉) is a hot spring place in Kumaishi, Yakumo town located in the northwestern part of Hakodate city. There are Kuma-no-Yu (熊の湯), a nature open-air bath, and Hiratanai-so (平田内荘). The Kuma-no-Yu in a mountain at about 250 m above sea level is one of secret onsen in Yakumo. Speaking of the Kuma-no-Yu, the Kuma-no-Yu in Rausu is more famous than here, but here is popular, too. But as the name suggests, no wonder that the bears appear here, so beware of the bears. * Kuma means a bear in Japanese. It is around 4 km towards the sea, and there Kumaishi Young People Trip Village (熊石青少年旅行村 * camping ground), Yakumo Kumaishi History Museum (八雲町熊石歴史記念館) and Hiratanai Ski Resort are around the Hiratanai-so. Usubetsu Onsen

Usubetsu Onsen (臼別温泉) is a hot spring place in Taisei, Setana town located in the northwest part of Hakodate city. A signboard is a mark along Raiden National Route (雷電国道 * National Route 229), and visitors turn and go straight for around 3 km, and the end of the road is the Usubetsu Onsen. Only Utopia Usubetsu (湯とぴあ臼別) is built. This onsen has an atmosphere such as a secret onsen in the heart of a mountain. But it is easy to access by car. Drive carefully because a gravel road sometimes is landslides. Except the Utopia Usubetsu, restraunts, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built. Article is here

Okupirika Onsen

Okupirika Onsen (奥美利河温泉) is a hot spring place in Imakane town located in the northwest part of Hakodate city. Visitors go straight for around 10 km along Hokkaido Road 999 (北海道道999号), and the end of the road is the Okupirika Onsen. Only Okupirika Onsen "Yama-no-Ie (山の家)" is built in the Natural Recreation Forest (自然休養林) that virgin beech forests grow very thickly, and has an atmosphere such as a secret onsen in the heart of a mountain. But the above sea level is around 225 m, and is not high surprisingly. By the way, Drive carefully because the narrow road with around 8 km in lengh is rough halfway through. Chihasegawa Onsen

Chihasegawa Onsen (千走川温泉) is a hot spring place in Shimamaki village facing the Sea of Japan located in the northern part of Hakodate city, and is about 6 km away from the center of the Shimamaki. Only Chihasegawa Onsen Ryokan (ちはせ川温泉旅館) is built at about 80 m above sea level in a mountain. Hot springs were discovered in 1871. There are Garo Falls (賀老の滝) and Dragon Water (ドラゴンウォーター) near here. By the way, the Dragon Water is natural carbonated spring that is gushing out from cracks of rocks. A taste is just like Perrier. It seems to be effective for Chronic digestive diseases, Constipation and Anemia. The Dragon Water is connected with the Dragon King Legend of the Garo Falls, so is named after it. Article is here

Gunai Onsen

Gunai Onsen (宮内温泉) is a hot spring place in Shimamaki village facing the Sea of Japan located in the northern part of Hakodate city, and is about 4 km away from the center of the Shimamaki. Only Gunai Onsen Ryokan (宮内温泉旅館) is built at about 65 m above sea level in a mountain. It is handed down that hot springs were discovered in around 1850. Hanako (花子), a dying elephant, and Mr. Shujiro Shinoda (信田修治郎) took a bath for medical purposes in 1971, and became a famous nationwide news. In that case, a small zoo was built in the site, too. Futamata Radium Onsen

Futamata Radium Onsen (二股ラヂウム温泉) is a hot spring place in Oshamanbe town located in the western part of Lake Toya (洞爺湖). Only Futamata Radium Onsen Ryokan (二股らじうむ温泉旅館) is built at around 200 m above sea level at the foot of Mt. Oshamanbedake, and is well-known as a secret onsen. A building surrounded by trees is around the end of Hokkaido Road 842. The distance is around 20 km far away from the center of the Oshamanbe, and restraunts, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built. There is a calcareous sinter with 25 m in height beside the building, and it has been designated as a natural monument by Hokkaido in 1965, and has been still growing up. This is one of only 2 largest calcareous sinters in the world together with Travertine Terraces in Yellowstone National Park. Secret Onsen and Nature Onsen in Central Hokkaido

Central Hokkaido as well as Eastern Hokkaido have the large land, but a lot of the secret onsen and the nature onsen are in Niseko and Mt. Daisetsuzan. The following are the secret onsen and the nature onsen within driving place. * Kawamata Onsen is needed a walk. Except those, some the secret onsen and the nature onsen must be raeched on foot. For example, Koyunuma Pond (小湯沼) in Niseko, Okino Onsen (沖野温泉) in Shiraoi. Funbe Seaside Onsen (フンベ海浜温泉) in Noboribetsu and Hiyoshi-no-Yu (日吉の湯) in Yubari are closed down.

Tokachidake Onsen

Tokachidake Onsen (十勝岳温泉) is a hot-spring place in Kamifurano town located in the southernern part of Asahikawa city. There are 2 buildings, Yumoto Ryounkaku (湯元凌雲閣) and Kamihoro-so (カミホロ荘) at around 1200 m above sea level, and it is said that the Kamihoro-so is a hot spring facility at the highest place in Hokkaido. There is a trailhead to Tokachidake Mountain Range (十勝岳連峰) at the end of a road, and a free parking lot and a restroom are built, too. The trailhead is next to the Yumoto Ryounkaku, and the Kamihoro-so is located under there little. The Tokachidake Onsen is famous for enjoying Sunrise, Sunset and Sea of Clouds because of the high place. Fall foliage are beautiful in an autumn, so a lot of tourists come. Fukiage Onsen

Fukiage Onsen (吹上温泉) is a hot spring place in Kamifurano town located in the southern part of Asahikawa city. There are Fukiage Roten-no-Yu (吹上温泉露天の湯) and Fukiage Onsen Rest Center Hakugin-so (吹上温泉保養センター 白銀荘) at 1200 m above sea level. Those are popular for high quality hot springs and a sense of openness. A type of the hot springs is acidic calcium and sodium sulfate chloride spring, and its characteristic is sour taste. That has a lot of the meta-silicic acid content, so it seems to be effective for beautiful skin. Unfortunately, restraunts, cafes, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built. Marukoma Onsen (丸駒温泉) is a hot spring place surrounded by forests and the lake at the foot of Mt. Eniwadake (恵庭岳) in the east side of Lake Shikotsu (支笏湖) located in the western part of Chitose city, and is famous for easy access to a secret onsen close to New Chitose Airport, Sapporo and Tomakomai. Bankei Onsen

Bankei Onsen (蟠渓温泉) is a hot spring resort in Sobetsu town located in the eastern part of Lake Toya (洞爺湖). 4 hot spring facilities, Yunotoya (湯人家), Bankei Fureai Center (蟠渓ふれあいセンター), Ito Onsen Ryokan Hikari Onsen (伊藤温泉旅館 ひかり温泉) and Bangaku-so (蟠岳荘) are built along Usu National Route (National Route 453), and Osaruyu (オサル湯), a nature onsen, is on the rivershore of Osaru river (長流川). Except the hot spring facilities, restraunts, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built. The distance is around 15 km far away from the center of the Sobetsu, and Kitayuzawa Onsen (北湯沢温泉), Orofure Pass (オロフレ峠) and Sankaidaki Park (三階滝公園) are relatively near here. Article is here

Kawamata Onsen

Kawamata Onsen (川又温泉) is a hot spring place in Noboribetsu city located in the northeastern part of Muroran city, and is well-known as a secret onsen at about 240 m above sea level in mountains. Brown bears may inhabit in forests. The distance is around 16 km far away from the center of the Horobetsu, so there is nothing around here. But Horobetsu Dam (幌別ダム) and Kawakami Nature Park are relatively near here. Speaking of the Noboribetsu, Onsen such as Noboribetsu Onsen (登別温泉), Shinnoboribetsu Onsen (新登別温泉) and Noboribetsu Karurusu Onsen (カルルス温泉) are famous. In addition, famous tourist attractions are Jigokudani (地獄谷), Noboribetsu Bear Ranch (のぼりべつ熊牧場), Noboribetsu Date Jidaimura (登別伊達時代村) and Noboribetsu Marine Park Nixe (登別マリンパークニクス). Niseko Kogane Onsen

Niseko Kogane Onsen (ニセコ黄金温泉) is a hot spring facility for day trip bath in Rankoshi town. A building is surrounded by fields, and Mr. Hayashi (林) and his wife, around 80 years old, run it. Originally they used to be a farmer, and hot springs gushed out when they dug agricultural well water, so they built the hot spring facility on their site. It is surprising that all facilities about the hot springs are handmade. Article is here

Niseko Goshiki Onsen

Niseko Goshiki Onsen (ニセコ五色温泉) is a hot spring place in Niseko town located in the southwestern part of Sapporo city, and has an atmosphere such as a secret onsen in a mountain. There are Goshikinuma Onsen Ryokan (五色温泉旅館), Niseko Yama-no-Ie (ニセコ山の家), Goshiki Onsen Information Center (五色温泉インフォメーションセンター), Niseko Campsite (ニセコ野営場) and Niseko Shrine (ニセコ神社) in the heart of the mountain at 750 m above sea level, and here is a base for hikers that go up Mt. Annupuri (アンヌプリ) and Mt. Iwonupuri (イワオヌプリ). Unfortunately, restraunts, cafes, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built. The origin of the Goshiki Onsen has some opinions, and it is said that "Goshiki Onsen seems to have 5 types of hot springs" or "Sulfur is mixed with the hot springs, and looks 5 colors" are most plausible. * Goshiki means 5 colors in English. Tourists visit here all the year round, and Especially, hikers enjoy mountains in a summer, and backcountry skiers or backcountry snowboarders enjoy themselves in a winter. The Niseko Goshiki Onsen has heavy snow, and Hokkaido Road 58 (道道58号) from the Niseko Goshiki Onsen to Kutchan is closed to traffic in a winter season (from November to May). Niseko Niimi Onsen

Niseko Niimi Onsen (ニセコ新見温泉) is a hot spring place in Rankoshi town located in the southwestern part of Sapporo city. In the heart of the mountain at 497 m above sea level, there are 2 onsen ryokan, Niimi Honkan (新見本館) and Niimi Onsen Hotel (新見温泉ホテル), along Hokkaido Road 268. The 2 adjacent buildings are built just in front of a gate for closing to traffic in a winter (from late October to late May), and are surrouded by forests, so secret onsen is the perfect word to describe the Niseko Niimi Onsen. It takes about 30 minutes by car from the center of the Rankoshi to here. Unfortunately, restraunts, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built. Because Mr. Naotaro Niimi (新見直太朗) discovered the hot springs, here was named after his family name. This onsen seemed to reveal to him in a dream. A bronze statue of the Naotaro Niimi is built near the buildings. Both onsen ryokan closed down in 2016, but the Niimi Honkan has been restarted as Niimi Onsen since 2017. Article is here

Niseko Yumoto Onsen

Niseko Yumoto Onsen (ニセコ湯本温泉) is a hot spring place at around 560 m above sea level in Rankoshi town located in the southwestern part of Sapporo city. There are 3 hot spring facilities, Chisenupuri Ski Resort (チセヌプリスキー場), Niseko Oyunuma Pond (大湯沼), Koyunuma pond (小湯沼), Oyunuma Nature Pavilion (大湯沼自然展示館) and Yumoto Onsen Campsite (湯本温泉野営場) at the foot of Mt. Chisenupuri, and footbath can be enjoyed at the Niseko Oyunuma Pond in a summer, and skiing and snowboarding can be enjoyed in a winter. Niseko Yakushi Onsen

Niseko Yakushi Onsen (ニセコ薬師温泉) is a hot spring place in Rankoshi town located in the southwestern part of Sapporo city, and is one of three major secret onsen in Japan together with Yachi Onsen in Aomori Prefecture and Soya Onsen in Tokushima Prefecture. Only Niseko Yakushi Onsen Ryokan (薬師温泉旅館) is built at around 180 m above sea level in the mountain, and is surrouded by forests, so secret onsen is the perfect word to describe the Niseko Yakushi Onsen. Unfortunately, restraunts, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built. Hot springs were discovered in 1896, and the onsen was called "Narita Onsen (成田温泉)" at that time. Eastern Hokkaido as well as Central Hokkaido have the large land, but a lot of the secret onsen and the nature onsen are in Mt. Daisetsuzan, Lake Kussharo and Shiretoko Peninsula. The following are the secret onsen and the nature onsen within driving place. Except those, some the secret onsen and the nature onsen must be raeched on foot. For example, Kunbetsu Onsen (薫別温泉) in the Shiretoko Peninsula, Iouyama Onsen (硫黄山温泉) in Teshikaga, Yu-no-Taki (湯の滝) in Shintoku, Shiriopa-no-Yu (シリオパの湯), Temujin-no-Yu (テムジンの湯), Chinika-no-Yu (チニカの湯) and Menoko-no-Yu (メノコの湯), Gakeshita-no-Yu (崖下の湯), Pilla-no-Yu (ピラの湯), Makupeka-no-Yu (マクペカの湯), Dam-no-Yu (ダムの湯) in Shikaoi. Setose Onsen (瀬戸瀬温泉) is a hot spring place in Engaru town located in the northwestern part of Kitami city. The distance is around 20 km far away from the center of the Engaru, and only Setose Onsen Hotel (セトセ温泉ホテル) is built at about 340 above sea level around a traffic gate along Hokkaido Road 493 in the heart of mountains in Engaru. Maruseppu Onsen

Maruseppu Onsen (丸瀬布溫泉) is a hot-spring resort in Maruseppu, Engaru town located in the northwestern part of Kitami city. 2 hot spring facilities, Maruseppu Onsen Yamabiko (丸瀬布温泉やまびこ) and Maure Villa (マウレ山荘), are built at about 300 above sea level in the mountain. Visitors go straight for about 10 km along Hokkaido Road 1070 from the center of Maruseppu, and there is a foret park named Ikoi-no-Mori (いこいの森), and SL locomotive "Amamiya 21-Go (雨宮21号)" runs around a garden, and a park golf course, an auto campsite, a tennis court and Insect Habits Building (昆虫生態館) are built. At the Insect Habits Building, insects presented by Mr. Sho Aikawa (哀川翔), a famous actor, are displayed, and it is called "Aniki-no-Mori (アニキの森)". The Maure Villa is about 1 km away from the Maruseppu Onsen Yamabiko. From there on there is Yamahiko Falls (山彦の滝), and the Hokkaido Road 1070 is closed to traffic. Tomuraushi Onsen (トムラウシ温泉) is a hot spring place at end of Hokkaido Road 718 in Shintoku town located in the northwest part of Obihiro city, and is around 60 km distance through the Hokkaido Road 718 from the center of the Shintoku town. Only Kokumin-Shukusha Higashi-Taisetsu-so (国民宿舎東大雪荘) has opened a business at 640 m above sea level in a mountain of Estern Daisetsu Area, Daisetuzan National Park, and is well-known for meeting rare wild animals such as Yezo Sable. Osoushi Onsen (オソウシ温泉) is a hot spring place in Shintoku town located in the northwest of Obihiro city. Only Shikanoyu-so (鹿乃湯荘) has opened a business in a mountain of Estern Daisetsu Area, Daisetuzan National Park. The Shikanoyu-so has highest alkaline hot springs (ph 10) in Hokkaido, and the strong alkaline hot springs like soapy water with smooth and slippery touch is famous. A secret onsen in the heart of the mountain is popular for a lot of onsen lovers, too. The Shikanoyu-so is hard to be founded, and is around 6 km distance through a forestry road from Hokkaido Road 718 (北海道道718号). Drive carefully because the narrow road is rough. Meto Onsen (芽登温泉) is a hot spring place in Ashoro town located in the northern part of Obihiro city. Only Meto Onsen Hotel (芽登温泉ホテル) is built below Nukanan Dam (糠南ダム). Unfortunately, restraunts, cafes, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built. It is the origin of the Meto Onsen that Mr. Shigenori Ito (伊東重記) found a gushing hot spring place known by Ainu people in 1901. Shikaribetsuko Kotan Open-air Bath on Frozen Lake

Lake Shikaribetsu in Shikaoi town located in the northwestern part of Obihiro city is a lake located in the highest place at altitude of 800 m in the lakes of Hokkaido, and is the only natural lake in Daisetsuzan National Park. The distnace is around 30 km far away from the center of the Shikaoi, and Shikaribetsu Kohan Onsen (然別湖畔温泉) is in the western side of Lake Shikaribetsu. Rushin Onsen (留真温泉) is a hot spring place in Urahoro town located in the eastern part of Obihiro city. The end of Hokkaido Road 947 is the Rushin Onsen, and it takes about 30 minutes from the center of the Urahoro to here by car. Only Urahoro Rushin Onsen (うらほろ留真温泉) is built at 100 m above sea level. The ground has been developed around a new building, so I think that visitors can not feel a secret onsen. Aurora Onsen (オーロラ温泉) is a hot spring place in Shibecha town located in the north part of Kushiro city. Aurora Farm Village (オーロラファームヴィレッジ) is around 1.5 km distance through a graveled path from Tsurui National Route (鶴居国道 * National Route 274), and is a nature experience village surrounded by forests beside the northern tip of Kushiro-Shitsugen Wetland (釧路湿原). Total area is 991,735.537 m2, and Center House (センターハウス), hot spring facilities, cottages, a camping ground and a lookout are built on the site. Here with rich nature is popular for people came from outside Hokkaido, A whole mountain is like the Aurora Farm Village. There are the Kushiro-Shitsugen Wetland, 900 Sogen Grassland (900草原) and Tawadaira Observaton Deck (多和平キャンプ場) around the Aurora Onsen. By the way, an entrance gate is closed at 20:00. Meakan Onsen

Meakan Onsen (雌阿寒温泉) is a hot spring place in Ashoro town located in the northwestern part of Kushiro city, and is well-knonw as a secter onsen in a mountain at around 720 m above sea level in Akan Mashu National Park (阿寒摩周国立公園). Only Nonaka Onsen (野中温泉), Nonaka Onsen Annex Building (野中温泉別館), Kiefuku (景福), a public parking lot and a public restroom are built at an entrance of Lake Onneto (オンネトー). A lot of hikers come to go up Mt. Meakandake (雌阿寒岳) or Mt. Akanfuji (阿寒富士), and here is popular for the Lake Oneneto and rare type of hot springs. The distance is around 50 km away from the center of the Ashoro, and the distance is around 20 km away from Akako Onsen Resort (阿寒湖温泉街), so a convenience store is not built. Kotan Onsen

Kotan Onsen (コタン温泉) is a small hot spring resort in Teshikaga town located in the north part of Kushiro city. Kotan means a village in Ainu language. Around here has been the village for Ainu people since a very long time ago, and it becomes the small hot spring resort at present, and there are some accommodations, Kotan Ainu Museum of History and Folklore (コタンアイヌ民俗資料館), Ainu Traditional Crafts Shop named "Kotan-no-Ie (コタンの店)", Restraunt Marukibune (レストラン 丸木舟) with serving Ainu meals and a cafe named "Jiji cafe Canoe (ぢぢ 喫茶 カヌー)". Wakoto Onsen (和琴温泉) is hot spring place in Teshikaga town located in the north part of Kushiro city. The hot spring gushes out at the lakeshore in the southern part of Lake Kussharo (屈斜路湖) in Akan Mashu National Park. The Wakoto Onsen is the generic name of some onsen. 2 campsites, Wakoto Hanto Kohan Campsite (和琴半島湖畔キャンプ場) and Wakoto Campsite (和琴野営場), are at Wakoto Peninsula. Yoroushi Onsen

Yoroushi Onsen (養老牛温泉) is a hot-spring place in Nakashibetsu town located between Lake Mashu (摩周湖) and Notsuke Peninsula (野付半島). 2 onsen ryokan, Hotel Yoroushi (ホテル養老牛) and Yuyado Daiichi (湯宿だいいち) are built along Hokkaido Route 505, and Karamatsu-no-Yu (からまつの湯), a mixed bathing open-air bath for free, is a little away from the center of the Yoroushi Onsen. Unfortunately, restraunts, cafes, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built. The hot-spring place is surrounded by nature, and rare animals such as Blakiston's Fish Owl and Japanese sable inhabit a forest, so those animals sometimes appear at the accommodations. Seseki Onsen

Seseki Onsen (セセキ温泉) along Hokkaido Road 87 is a hot spring place in the sea in Rausu town located in the Shiretoko Peninsula (知床半島), and it is far away (around 20 km) from the center of the Rausu. Seseki means "Hot" in Ainu language, and it having the same meaning with hot springs, so I think that it had been known by Ainu people since long time ago. In all of recorded history, Mr. Ichitraro Horiuchi (堀内市太郎) found the hot springs in 1899, and made a public bathroom. After that, the bathroom sunk into the sea, so the open-air bath was left at present. It was used as a shooting place of the television drama "From the north country (北の国から)", Mr. Hidetaka Yoshioka, a famous actor, and Mr. Juro Kara, a famous actor, took a bath, so a lot of tourists has came. Rausu Onsen (羅臼温泉) is a hot spring place along Rausu River in Rausu town located in Shiretoko Peninsula (知床半島), and has been founded since 1783. Iwaobetsu Onsen (岩尾別温泉) is a hot spring place at about 215 m above sea level in Shari town located in the north side of Shiretoko peninsula (知床半島), and is famous as one of secret hot springs in Shiretoko National Park, and is near Kamuiwakka Hot Falls (カムイワッカ湯の滝) and Shiretoko Goko Lakes (知床五湖), and have famous natural open-air baths, Sandan-no-Yu (三段の湯) and Takimi-no-Yu (滝の湯). Only Hotel Chinohate (ホテル地の涯) and Kihoshita Hut (木下小屋) are built at the end of Hokkaido Road 93, and are used as hiker bases for Mt. Rausudake (羅臼岳). Unfortunately, restraunts, cafes, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built. They close a business in a winter season because the Hokkaido Road 93 is closed to traffic. Kawakita Onsen (川北温泉) is a hot spring place in Shibetsu town located in the root of the Shiretoko Peninsula, and is well-known as a secret onsen at about 310 above sea level in mountains. Here surrounded by trees is called "A nest of brown bears", so a lot of them inhabit. It is the origin of the Kawakita Onsen that Takezawa-no-Yu (竹沢の湯) was opened in the Meiji period. After that, some onsen ryokan closed down, up to now. Speaking of the Shibetsu, there is the head office of Fukuzumi (福住), a famous buckwheat noodles restraunt chain. Koshikawa Onsen

Koshikawa Onsen (越川温泉) is a hot spring place in Shari located in the root of Shiretoko Peninsula (知床半島), and has opened a business since 1976. An unmanned communal bath is built along National Route 244, and Former Koshikawa Bridge (越川橋梁跡) and white oil drums are a mark. It might be hard to find the place because there is not a direction board at all. It takes about 20 minutes from the center of Shari to here by car. Taisetsu Kogen Onsen (大雪高原温泉) is a hot spring place in Kamikawa town in the southeastern part of Asahikawa city. Taisetsu-Kogen-so (大雪高原山荘) is built at 1260 m above sea level in a mountain of Omote Daisetsu Area, Daisetuzan National Park. The distance is around 25 km far away from Sounkyo Onsen (層雲峡温泉). There are Brown Bear Information Center (ヒグマ情報センター) and Forest Patrol Kogen Base (森林パトロール高原事務所) around here, and Daisetsu Kogen Onsen Hiking Tour (大雪高原温泉沼めぐりコース) that is famous for beautiful fall foliage is built, too. Aizankei Onsen (愛山渓温泉) is a hot spring place at around 1010 m above sea level in Kamikawa town located in the eastern part of Asahikawa city, and has an atmosphere such as a secret onsen in the heart of a mountain. Aizankei Club (愛山渓倶楽部) surrounded by forests has opened a business in the mountain of Front Daisetsu Area, Daisetuzan National Park. Another building is only Aizankei Hut (愛山渓ヒュッテ) for hiker's accommodation, and restraunts, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built. Here is a trekking base of Mt. Nagayamadake (永山岳), Mt. Aibetsudake (愛別岳), Mt. Pippudake (比布岳) and Mt. Tobetsudake (当麻岳), and is trailheads of hiking courses for Numanotaira Marshland (沼の平湿原) and Kumoigahara Marshland (雲井ケ原湿原) that are famous for fall foliage. Aibetsu Drivinn (愛別ドライブイン) is a mark along National Route 38, and visitors turn and go straight for around 20 km, and the end of the road is the Aizankei Onsen. It takes about 40 minutes by car. Drive carefully because the road with around 10 km in lengh is narrow halfway through. In addition, careful of bears and deers across the road. It is out of signal area. Article is here

Asahidake Onsen

Asahidake Onsen (旭岳温泉) is a popular hot-spring place at 1100 m above sea level in Higashikawa town located in the southeastern part of Asahikawa city, and is located in the Daisetsuzan National Park (大雪山国立公園). It is a base for a trailhead to Daisetsuzan Mountains (大雪山連峰) or sightseeing of Asahidake Ropeway, and 9 accommodations dot for 1 km. There are Asahidake Visitor Center (旭岳ビジターセンター), a ski resort, a ropeway, Komadake Falls (駒止の滝) and Asahidake Youth Campsite (旭岳青少年野営場) in the Asahidake Onsen. Unfortunately, restraunts, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built. Hiking courses and cross-country skiing courses are built around the Asahidake Onsen, and birdwatching can be enjoyed. Mt. Asahidake (旭岳) in the Daisetsuzan National Park is famous for a beauty spot for fall foliage, and it is said that the earliest autumn leaves in Japan have a good reputation, so a lot of tourists come in an autumn. the cross-country skiing, ski and snowshoes can be enjoyed from a winter to a spring, and hiking and trekking can be enjoyed in a summer. Tenninkyo Onsen

Tenninkyo Onsen (天人峡温泉) is a hot-spring place in Higashikawa town located in the southeastern part of Asahikawa city. In Daisetsuzan National Park (大雪山国立公園), the Tenninkyo Onsen as well as Sounkyo is surrounded by columnar joints, and fall foliage can be enjoyed in an autumn, and is called a back room of Asahikawa (旭川の奥座敷). It is said that secret onsen is easily accessible by a road in the mountain. By the way, the road sometimes is closed by disaster. There are 2 onsen ryokan, Tenninkaku (天人閣) and Oyado Shikishima-so (お宿敷 島荘). Footbath "Tennyo-no-Ashiyu" (天女の足湯) and Takimidai Lookout (滝見台) are provided, too. Unfortunately, restraunts, cafes, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built. Asahi Onsen

Asahi Onsen (旭温泉) is a hot spring place in Enbetsu town between Wakkanai city and Rumoi city. A signboard of Enbetsu Asahi Onsen (えんべつ旭温泉) is a mark along Ororon Line (オロロンライン * National Route 232), and visitors turn and go straight for around 6 km, and the end of the road is the Asahi Onsen. Only the Enbetsu Asahi Onsen is built there. Unfortunately, restraunts, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built. It is the origin of the Asahi Onsen that they succeeded in drilling in 1972, and natural gas and hot springs have been gushed out. There is Kanaura Natural Flower Garden (金浦原生花園) near the Asahi Onsen, and Yezo Licorice are in full bloom from June to July. By the way, nonstop buses do not run from Sapporo or New Chitose Airport to here, But a shuttle bus runs from the center of Enbetsu to here, too, and visitors for day trip bath can use it, too.
