Secret Onsen of Hokkaido

Because Hokkaido is large and has most hot springs places in Japan, secrets onsen and nature onsen are rich. The secrets onsen and nature onsen that riders and professional campers know much about Hokkaido and take a bath at are dotted around Hokkaido. The secrets onsen and nature onsen can be enjoyed extraordinary situation. I just went to following onsen, but there is still a lot. If everybody go out for a trip, Why do not everybody experience extraordinary situation?

Shikaribetsukyo Onsen Shika-no-Yu

As of August 2017, Iwama Onsen (岩間温泉) and Nupuntomuraushi Onsen (ヌプントムラウシ温泉) were destroyed by Typhoon in 2017. It really is too bad that I have never taken a bath at the Iwama Onsen and the Nupuntomuraushi Onsen.

Koshikawa Onsen in Shari

Koshikawa Onsen (越川温泉) is an unmanned communal bath along Japan National Route 244 in Shari located in the root of Shiretoko Peninsula (知床半島). Former Koshikawa Bridge (越川橋梁跡) and white oil drums are a mark. It might be hard to find the place because there is not a direction board at all. Koshikawa Onsen Management Association (越川温泉管理組合) manages a facility for local people mainly. But ordinary people can take a bath if only they pay an entrance fee JPY 200 and have good manners such as taking their garbage with them and keeping a bathroom clean. The Koshikawa Onsen is popular with motorcycle trip riders and onsen lovers. Article is here

Kawamata Onsen in Noboribetsu

Kawamata Onsen (川又温泉) is a natural opem-air bath in Kozan-cho, Noboribetsu city. Mr. Hyokichi Kawamata (川又兵吉) found gushing hot spring along Washibetsu-kuruma River (鷲別来馬川) in 1908, so it was named after his family name. Kozan-cho was developed to dig sulphur, and Horobetsu kozan (幌別鉱山) opened a business, so it was developed around Kozan-cho, too. I guess that Mr. Hyokichi Kawamata also was one of the persons concerned the Horobetsu kozan. Ryokan was built nearby the Kawamata Onsen and was crowded with the persons concerned the Horobetsu kozan in those days. But only stone foundations remain now in the heart of the mountains. Then an open-air bath and trails are maintenanced by staffs of Forest Kozan (ふぉれすと鉱山) and onsen lovers. Thanks! Article is here

Taisetsu Kogen Onsen in Kamikawa

Taisetsu-Kogenso (大雪高原山荘) is a hot-spring ryokan in Kamikawa town in the southeastern part of Asahikawa city and is near Sounkyo Onsen. There is a building at 1260 m above sea level, and they opened a business only for 123 days. A trail path of Daisetsu Kogen Onsen Hiking Tour (大雪高原温泉沼めぐりコース) is built near the Taisetsu-Kogenso, and it is known for seeing beautiful fall foliage. There are only 2 facilities, Brown Bear Information Center (ヒグマ情報センター) and Forest Patrol Kogen Base (森林パトロール高原事務所), around the Taisetsu-Kogenso. In addition, visitors must drive for approximately 10 km on a gravel road with one traffic lane to arrive at the Taisetsu-Kogenso. Please be careful about brown bears because here is a home of the brown bears. The visitors seem to be careful about quite a few accidents to deer suddenly rushing out in front of cars. Setose Onsen in Engaru

Setose Onsen Hotel (セトセ温泉ホテル) is a long-established hot-spring hotel in Engaru town located in the northwestern part of Kitami city and was founded in 1956. There is a building along a road in the heart of mountains in Engaru. Because the road is closed to traffic at the place, it is just image of a little-known onsen in the heart of the mountains. The building has an atmosphere such as the Showa period, and visitors may taste the atmosphere of the little-known onsen. Article is here

Kanno Onsen in Shikaoi

Shikaribestukyo Kanno Onsen (然別峡かんの温泉) is a hot-spring facility in Shikaoi town located in the northwestern part of Obihiro city. There are accommodations and hot spring facilities for day trip visitors in a heart of mountains. This place has a bad cell phone reception. It was founded in 1911 and was popular as an unexplored hot spring, but it was closed in 2007. It has been renovated in 2014 and restarted their business. It has a cleanliness because buildings are new. There is Shikaribetsukyo Onsen (然別峡温泉鹿の湯) near Shikaribestukyo Kanno Onsen. Article is here

Tokachidake Onsen in Kamifurano

Tokachidake Onsen (十勝岳温泉) is a hot-spring place in Kamifurano town located in the southernern part of Asahikawa city. There are 2 buildings, Yumoto Ryounkaku (湯元凌雲閣) and Kamihoroso (カミホロ荘) at around 1200 m above sea level. There is a trailhead (Free parking lot and restroom) to Tokachidake Mountain Range (十勝岳連峰), and it is next to the Yumoto Ryounkaku. The Kamihoroso is located under there little. Article is here

Meto Onsen in Ashoro

Meto Onsen Hotel (芽登温泉ホテル) is a long-established hot-spring hotel in Ashoro town located in the northern part of Obihiro city and was founded in 1901. It is famous for watching a Blakiston's fish owl. There is a building in the heart of mountains in Ashoro, and visitors must go ahead approximately 4 km along a gravel path. I used a car navigation system on my smartphone, but the smartphone became out of range on the way and I got impatient. When I thought that it was dangerous to lose my way in such heart of the mountains, and I believed a signboard along the gravel path and advanced, so I arrived properly. It is the heart of the mountains that I wondered uneasily whether there is really the hot-spring hotel, but because it is such a place, the Blakiston's fish-owl is wathced well. * It seems to be renewed in 2015. Banjyaku Onsen in Yakumo

Banjyaku Onsenso (盤石温泉荘) is a hot spring hut in Yakumo town located in the northwest of Hakodate city and next to Kaminoyu Onsen (上の湯温泉). It may be named after along a forest road "Bajuyakudake Line (盤石岳線)". This hot spring hut is open to the public through an owenr who runs Ykiniku Ryozanpaku (焼肉梁山泊) in Hakodate. Thanks the owner for taking a bath! So visitors must keep this hut clean. Article is here

Aurora Onsen in Shibecha

Aurora Onsen (オーロラ温泉) is a facility of Aurora Farm Village (オーロラビレッジファーム) in Shibecha town. In addition, there are some facilities such as cottages, a camping ground and view points at a site of 99.1737 m2. It is popular by people outside of Hokkaido and is rich in nature. Of course, a styaing is possible, and visitors can enjoy meals at a restraunt, too. It is also known for enjoying fresh moor hot springs and can be said that Onsen fun must go Onsen. Article is here

Shikaribetsukyo Onsen Shika-no-Yu

Shikaribetsukyo Onsen Shika-no-Yu (然別峡温泉鹿の湯) is a famous natural open-air bath in the heart of mountains in Shikaoi town located in the northwestern part of Obihiro city. It is used by many campers from July to September at the Shikaribetsukyo Camping Ground near Kanno Onsen (菅野温泉). There is a management office near an entrance of the Shikaribetsukyo Camping Ground (然別峡野営場), and campers pay a fee here. Bathers can use the natural open-air bath free, but there is a donation box, and the bathers can give a small token. A commno kitchen and a restroom are provided at the Shikaribetsukyo Camping Ground. By the way, this place has a bad cell phone reception. Article is here

Kotan Onsen

Kotan Onsen (コタン温泉) is a natural open-air hot spring facility on Lake Kussharo (屈斜路湖) shore in Teshikaga town located in the north part of Kushiro city. An entrance fee to the bath facility is free of charge. This is a bathtub surrounded by rocks. The water surface of the hot spring is same height as the water surface of the lake, it is the impression that myself totally enters the lake. This is a mixed bathing that about 4 people seem to take a bath, but the bath for men and women is partitioned by a rock only a little. Visitors can wear their swimsuits and take a bath. There are 2 changing rooms for men and women, too. Article is here

Seseki Onsen

Seseki Onsen (セセキ温泉) is an open-air hot spring facility in Rausu town on the Shiretoko Peninsula (知床半島) and was discovered in 1899. Hamasawa-suisan (濱澤水産) manages it now. It was used as a shooting place for famous TV drama "From the North Country (北の国から)" and is natural seawater mixed hot spring that many people visit. An entrance fee to the bath facility is free of charge. Generally a bathing period is from July 1 to September 15. Article is here

Okupirika Onsen

Okupirika Onsen (奥美利河温泉) is a hot-spring place in Imakane town located in the northwest part of Hakodate city. There is Okupirika Onsen "Yama-no-Ie (山の家)", tourists can take a bath during only summer. There is Kur-plaza-pirika (クアプラザピリカ) on the foot of a mountain, and the tourists can take a bath all year. There are Pirika ski resort, Pirika camping ground, Pirika Dam and Pirika Ruins. Article is here

Iwaobetsu Onsen

Iwaobetsu Onsen (岩尾別温泉) is one of secret hot springs in Shiretoko peninsula (知床半島). There is Iwaobetsu Onsen near Shiretoko Goko Lakes (知床五湖) and is used as a trailhead to Mt. Rausudake (羅臼岳). Because it is closed to traffic in a winter, it does not open a business. There is only one hotel, Hotel Chinohate (ホテル地の涯), and it is full of mountain climbers. In addition, it is known as famous natural onsen, Sandan-no-Yu (三段の湯) and Takimi-no-Yu (滝の湯). Article is here

Sanko Onsen

Sanko Onsen (三香温泉) is a hot-spring ryokan on the shore of Lake Kussharo (屈斜路湖) in Teshikaga town located in the northern part of Kushiro city and was founded in 1980. There is a building near Wakoto Peninsula (和琴半島), but visitors possibly may be hard to find it. There are a main building and a wooden entrance when I arrived at there. A dog was kept in front of the entrance and he was gentle. His name is Kinta (キン太). Article is here

Fukiage Onsen

Fukiage Onsen (吹上温泉) is a hot spring place in Kamifurano town located in the southern part of Asahikawa city. There are Fukiage Roten-no-Yu (吹上温泉露天の湯) and Fukiage Onsen Rest Center Hakuginso (吹上温泉保養センター 白銀荘) at 1200 m above sea level. Hot springs were discovered in 1897. Because Mt. Tokachidake (十勝岳) volcano became active in 1987, and a temperature of the hot springs rose and became the just right water temperature for bathing, it became a popular sightseeing spot. Mizunashi-Kaihin Onsen

Mizunashi-Kaihin Onsen (水無海浜温泉) is a hot spring place in the eastern part of Hakodate city. There are a natural onsen and Hotel Cape (ホテル恵風) at the easternmost tip of Kameda Peninsula (亀田半島). It takes approximately 1 hour by car from Hakodate city. Because a road is narrow, please be careful about driving. There are Esanmisaki Park (恵山岬公園), Cape Esan (恵山岬) and a lighthouse near Mizunashi-Kaihin Onsen. Article is here

Kawakita Onsen

Kawakita Onsen (川北温泉) is a hot spring facility in Shibetsu town. There is the hot spring facility in mountains that bears come out a lot up. A signboard stands near Kanayama Bridge (金山橋) along national route No.244, and vitiors arrive at Kawakita Onsen if the visitors will go along a rough road for 6 km. Drive carefully because the rough narrow road faces cliffs. It will be buried under a snow in a winter and the visitors must walk on the snow. Article is here

Shikaribetsuko Kotan (然別コタン) is a winter event held from late January to late March in Shikaoi town located in the northwestern part of Obihiro city and strated near Shikaribetsu Kohan Onsen (然別湖畔温泉) resort in 1981. An open-air bath with a building made of ice and snow is built on Lake Shikaribetsu (然別湖). This is famous as an eye-catcher of Shikaribetsu Kotan. Aidomari Onsen

Aidomari Onsen (相泊温泉) is the Japanese's easternmost hot spring place in Rausu town located in the Shiretoko peninsula and was discovered in 1899. This is a public bath for local fisherman, it is famous as wild natural onsen on the seashore, so many tourists visit. A bathtub seems to bury itself underwater by a storm. Hiratanai Onsen

Hiratanai Onsen (平田内温泉) is a hot spring place in Kumaishi, Yakumo town located in the northwestern part of Hakodate city. Tourists can take a day trip bath at Kuma-no-Yu (熊の湯) and Hiratanaiso (平田内荘). There is Kumaishi Young People Trip Village (熊石青少年旅行村 * camping ground) near the Hiratanaiso. The tourists must go ahead for about 4 km from Hiratanaiso towards a mountain to leave for the Kuma-no-Yu. As for the Kuma-no-Yu, as its name is an origin (Kuma means a bear in Japanese language), No wonder that the bears appear at the place. Article is here

Yoroushi Onsen

Yoroushi Onsen (養老牛温泉) is a hot-spring place in Nakashibetsu town located between Lake Mashu (摩周湖) and Notsuke Peninsula (野付半島). It is said that Yoroushi Onsen was discovered by Ainu people about 300 years ago. There are only 2 accommodations, Hotel Yorouushi (ホテル養老牛) and Yuyado Daiichi (湯宿だいいち), and there is the Karamatsu-no-Yu (からまつの湯) that is mixed bathing open-air spa and is free of charge is a little far away. Owls inhabit a forest and it is known for watching the owls at each hotel. There is Yoro Falls near the hotels. Article is here

Rausu Onsen

Rausu Onsen (羅臼温泉) is a hot-spring place along Rausu River in Rausu town located in Shiretoko Peninsula (知床半島). There are famous onsen Kuma-no-Yu (熊野の湯), a geyser, Rausu Visitor Center (羅臼ビジターセンター), hot spring facilities such as Rausu Daiichi Hotel (るらうす第一ホテル) and Hotel Mine-no-Yu (ホテル峰の湯). Kuma-no-yu is a little away from the hot-spring place. There is Shiretoko National Park Rausu Onsen camping ground (知床国立公園羅臼温泉野営場) near Kuma-no-Yu, too. Article is here

Wakoto Onsen

Wakoto Onsen (和琴温泉) is natural baths around Lake Kussharo (屈斜路湖) in Teshikaga town located in the northern part of Kushiro city and is the generic name of "Wakoto Open-air Bath (和琴温泉露天風呂)" and "Public Bath (琴公衆浴場)" in Wakoto Peninsula (和琴半島). In addition, there is a walking path with about 2.5 km in length that tourists can make a round trip, and there is a hot spring gushing place called Oyakotsu Jigoku (オヤコツ地獄 * Oyakotsu Hell). The tourists were able to take a bath in old days. Unfortunately it is currently prohibited to enter the Oyakotsu Jigoku. In addition, it seems to be the hot springs called Oku-no-Yu (奥の湯) appropriate for secret hot spring, too. I am interested in this hot spings. Article is here

Bankei Onsen

Bankei Onsen (蟠渓温泉) is a hot-spring place in Sobetsu town located in the eastern part of Lake Toya (洞爺湖) and is the place that hot springs have been gushed out since the Ainu period. The hot springs gush out along Osaru River (長流川), and it called Osaru-no-Yu (オサルの湯), many onsen funs come to take a bath at the natural open-air baths. There are 4 hot spring facilities, Yunotoya (湯人家), Bankei Fureai Center (蟠渓ふれあいセンター), Ito Ryokan Hikari Onsen (伊藤旅館ひかり温泉) and Bangakuso (蟠岳荘). Visiotrs can take a day trip bath in those facilities.
