Rice Bowls of Hokkaido

Hokkaido is called “Kingdom of Cooking Ingredients (食材王国)”. Fresh vegetables, fresh seafood and tasty meats are famous. Many types of rice bowls are served, for example seafood rice bowl in whole Hokkaido and local speciality rice bowl. I introduce tried rice bowls.

Seafood Rice Bowl

Seafood rice bowl is a bowl meal topped with fresh seafood of Hokkaido abundantly. Many restaurants serve sliced raw seafood such as prawns, cuttlefish, salmon, tuna, scallop, salmon roe, surf clam, sea urchin, crab. Tourists can eat the seafood rice bowl in whole Hokkaido. Salted Cod Roe Rice Bowl

Kaisenkobo Tarakoya Kojohama (海鮮工房たらこ家 虎杖浜) is sea foods processing store in Kojohama, Shiraoi town located between Tomakomai city and Noboribetsu city. Matsuda fisheries Co., Ltd. (松田水産株式会社) that is a fisheries processing company runs it. There is a building near Aroyo Onsen (アロヨ温泉) at Kojohama Onsen (虎杖浜温泉). There is sea foods processing store and is a restraunt at the building, too. Speaking of Kojohama, salted cod roe is famous, so I visited here to eat the salted cod roe around 11:00 (opening hour of restraunt) on weekdays. They serve some meals using the salted cod roe at the building. I ordered a salted cod roe rice bowl (たらこ丼) at a cash register. The price was JPY 1404. Article is here

Boiled Surf Clam Rice Bowl

Marutoma Shokudo (マルトマ食堂) is a famous restaurant in Tomakomai city. There is a restaurant at a wholesale market near a fishing port. It was founded in 1970. It is a prosperity restaurant as visitors lining up at lunchtime. An appearance of the building is old, but I was overwhelmed on cards for autographs inside. I realized it was very popular restaurant after all. Article is here

Matsumae Tsuna Sanshoku Rice Bowls (松前マグロ三色丼)

Speaking of Tuna, Oma town in Aomori prefecture is famous in Japan, but tunas are caughted in Matsumae town locaed in Oma town across Tsugaru strait (津軽海峡). Tuna sanshoku (Sanshoku means three kinds) bowls appeals to tourists, and tourists can eat those at 3 restaurants. I visited Urasato (浦里) this time. Urasato is a Japanese-style restaurant in Matsumae town. An owner was a sumo wrestler, and the sumo wrestler’s stew is a noted dish, too. Furthermore, the tourists seem to eat a ramen planned by TV program. Article is here

Pork Cutlet Rice Bowl with Sauce

Pork Cutlet Rice Bowl with Sauce (たれかつ丼) is said “Deep-Fried Pork Cutlet Rice Bowl without Beaten Egg”, and Niigata Prefecture is famous for Pork Cutlet Rice Bowl with Sauce. But that is served in Hokkaido, too. The Pork Cutlet Rice Bowl with Sauce of Kunneppu town is famous. Kunneppu town highly recommend it. In addition, Tanaka (田なか) serve the Pork Cutlet Rice Bowl with Sauce in Imagane town.

Fried Squid Legs Rice Bowl

Hanachan (花ちゃん) is a noodle stand in Kagura, Asahikawa city. There is a shop at Kagura shopping center. This noodle stand become popular among riders, I heard that a fried squid legs rice bowl (Gesodon) was eaten, and I visited here. Fried squid legs rice bowl (ゲソ丼) is a bowl with rice (donburi) topped with fried squid legs and green onions, and there are 2 kinds of seasonings (soy sauce or salt sauce). Many restraunts seem to serve the fried squid legs rice bowl in Asahikawa city, but each fried squid legs rice bowl seem to be different dishes. Article is here

Beef Steak Rice Bowl

Patona (ぱーとな) is a store specializing in hamburger steak and beef steaks in Chuo ward, Sapporo city. There is a restraunt at the business area and is crowded with business people on weekdays. The restraunt becomes a gallery, and displays are exchanged every month. There are many tables and families seem to enjoy. A beef steak rice bowl (ステーキ丼) is popular at this restraunt. I ordered it. Cheese Salmon Rice Bowl

Hamadori (はまどり) is a restraunt selling skewers of barbecued chicken (焼き鳥屋) in Taiki town located in the south part of Obihiro city. This restraunt is a bar restraunt basically, but they serve a cheese salmon rice bowl (チーズサーモン丼). Taiki town recommends the menu called the cheese salmon rice bowl and it will be new local dish. The cheese and the salmon seem to be ingredients representing Taiki town, and we eat 5 kinds of tempura using 3 seasonings. 5 dishes, a cheese salmon rice bowl, the seasonings, a pickle, a soup, a dessert, are combo meals. I visited here to eat it around 17:30 on sunday. Article is here

Chappu-Don

Takadaya (高田屋) is a long-established Japanese style restaurant in Sakae-machi, Takikawa city located between Sapporo city and Asahikawa city and was founded in 1953. This restraunt is near the Takikawa Station and has loved by local people. I visited here to eat a pork rice bowl named Chappu-Don (チャップ丼), Takikawa local specialty, around 15:00 on weekdays. There was not other customer at the restraunt. It had an atmosphere of good old restraunt. The restraunt had counter seats and tables, and family customers can enjoy eating. Article is here

Akan Grilled Venison Rice Bowl (阿寒焼き鳥丼) is a new noted product of Lake Akan. I visited a Restaurant Kisen (レストラン汽船) to eat it. There was a parking lot beside a building. I stopped car there and went to the restaurant on second floor. Article is here

Grilled Pike Congera Sea Eel Rice Bowl

Shiretoko Restaurant in Rausu town is a restaurant at second floor of roadside station “Shiretoko, Rausu (知床・らうす)”. I heard that a grilled pike congera sea Eel rice bowl (黒ハモ丼) at this restaurant was very popular for riders that tour around Hokkaido, and I visited here. Except the grilled pike congera sea eel rice bowl, a seafood rice bowl and a vanilla soft serve with deep ocean water are popular, too. Article is here

Abashiri Zanki Rice Bowl

Kinemakan (キネマ館) is a restaurant in Abashiri city located in the northeast part of Kitami city. There is a restaurant on second floor of roadside station “Drift Ice Highway Abashiri (流氷街道網走)”. I visited here to eat an Abashiri zanki rice bowl (網走ザンギ丼). The Abashiri zanki rice bowl is a rice bowl topped with fishery products and vegetables harvested in Abashiri and is served at 9 restaurants in Abashiri city. I did not know why interior decoration of the building was a movie theater style with the Showa period. I bought a meal ticket of the Abashiri zanki rice bowl via a ticket vendor at once. Diced Steak and Scrambled Eggs Rice Bowl

Restaurant Fusha (レストラン風車) is a roadside restaurant in Shimizu town located in the west part of Obihiro city. I heard that a diced steak and scrambled eggs rice bowl (十勝清水牛玉ステーキ丼) could be eaten, I visited here. The diced steak and scrambled eggs rice bowl is a local gourmet born on July 17, 2010 in Shimizu. It won consecutively in Local Gourmet Grand Prix Hokkaido 2013 and 2014. A cosmos ranch runs the restaurant fusha. Because it is a production ranch used Tokachi young beef, I can not help expecting it in the freshness of the beef. Article is here

Pork Rice Bowl

The pork rice bowl (豚丼) is a rice dish that is dished up grilled pork with sauce on rice. “Panchou (ぱんちょう)” in Obihiro is said to be an ancestor. The pork rice bowl has been famous in the eastern part of Hokkaido, but the dish is known in all Japan now. The feature is that pork overflows from the lid. Approximately 30 restaurants sell the pork rice bowl in only Obihiro neighboring. Each restaurants are particular about sauce and pork. A standard sauce of Obihiro pork rice bowl is a salty-sweet sauce, but restaurants such as “Tsuruhashi (鶴橋)” are served the pork rice bowl with bitter sauce, each restaurants compete on original taste. Many restaurants use various pork such as pork loins, pork ribs, superfine pork loins, superfine pork ribs. Article is here

Whitebait Rice Bowl

Shirasu Kaikan (しらす会館) was a restraunt opend in 2015 in Suttsu facing the Sea of Japan. Yoshino Shoten (吉野商店) that is famous for Yoshino Kakigoya (吉野かき小屋 * Oyster Hut) along Japan National Route 229 runs it, and it is opend a business during spring season (almost from April to June) for fishing whitebait. Suttsu (寿都) is known for atka mackerel and the whitebait in Hokkaido. The whitebait caught on the morning of that day is a special feature, and it can be eaten on that day. The mark is a yellow flag. By the way, whitebait (しらす) is a collective term for baby fishes such as Anchovy (カタクチイワシ), Japanese Pilchard (マイワシ), Japanese Sand Lance (イカナゴ), Eel (ウナギ), Sweetfish (アユ) and Herring (ニシン) in Japanese. Baby Japanese sand lances (小女子) are caught around the Suttsu. Article is here
