Bankei means "Hot spring in downstream" in Ainu language, and the onsen was well-known with the Ainu people from a long time ago. It is the origin of the Bankei Onsen that Mr. Kanichiro Ono (小野貫一郎) took over a right of the onsen from an Ainu leader, and built an onsen hut in 1880. At the peak period of Horobestu Sulfur Mine (幌別硫黄鉱山), the hot spring resort was crowded with a lot of tourists and geisha. But the hot spring resort has became desolate after closing the mine.
